Milwaukee: A rich and diverse history

What is know today as Milwaukee was home to indigenous people for thousands of years. Tribes including the Menominee, Ojibwe, Potawatomi, Ho-Chunk, Fox, Sauk and Mascouten all lived along the waterways and Lake Michigan. Europeans first appeared in the 17th century as traders and missionaries passed through. A trading post was the first established White settlement here in 1785.

Immigration led to explosive growth in Milwaukee starting in the 1840s. First, it was German immigrants. They were followed by Poles, Lithuanians, Russians, Swedes, Italians, Bohemians, French, Serbians and Irish. Later, Blacks came in the Great Migration of the early 20th century.

Milwaukee was the setting for two classic 70s sitcoms, Happy Days and its spinoff Laverne & Shirley.
