“The folks at Boehlke Bottled gas have always been friendly and helpful. We need propane for not only heating, but as part of my husband’s work as a blacksmith. They helped him set up and test his system and it has always worked great. We’re self-employed and have gotten help from people in the office to organize our records and they were really helpful and made it no problem. We’ll continue working with them.” — Jamie Sue B.

“Boehlke Bottled Gas is one of the best companies we have had the pleasure of working with. Over the years, they have worked with us in good times and bad. Their PreBuy program has saved us money more often than not. The people who work there are friendly and always helpful. We highly recommend this company as one of the best in the business.” — David H.

Jefferson County: History and small-town charm

Jefferson County was organized in 1839 following the creation of Wisconsin Territory.

Located between Madison and Milwaukee, it is a great place to live. With parks, trails, lakes, streams and wildlife areas, you can enjoy hiking, cycling, camping, cross-country skiing, boating and more.

Annual events that draw locals and tourists include the Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Festival in Watertown and Gemüetlichkeit Days, a celebration of German heritage in Jefferson with events such as the sauerkraut eating contest, polka hop lessons and a euchre tournament.

Notable natives and residents of Jefferson County include:

Elaine Roe, a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurses Corps during World War II, who was awarded a Silver Star with two other nurses for their heroism in protecting and saving 42 patients during a shelling attack on the 33rd Field Hospital near Anzio, Italy, in February of 1944. She and two other nurses who served that day were the first women ever to receive the Silver Star.

Kenneth Gruennert, a World War II U.S. Army sergeant who posthumously earned the U.S. military’s highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for single-handedly attacking and silencing the Japanese soldiers’ position during the Battle of Buna-Buna in 1942. In spite of being seriously wounded, he refused medical attention and went on to successfully attack a second bunker. Sadly, he was immediately killed by a sniper after his attack. He was 20 years old.

Gerald Endl, a World War II U.S. Army staff sergeant who posthumously earned the Medal of Honor for his actions during a Japanese attack near Anamo in New Guinea in 1944. With the platoon leader wounded in the attack, Endl assumed command. Seven wounded soldiers were trapped between him and the Japanese. Endl single-handedly held off the advance of the Japanese troops as they were rescued, then one-by-one rescued four other wounded soldiers. Endl was killed carrying the last one to safety. He was 28 years old.

Charlie Grimm, a Major League Baseball player, manager, broadcaster and executive known as “Jolly Cholly” for his outgoing personality and singing old-school songs while playing the banjo. He is in the Chicago Cubs Hall of Fame.

Rosemary Kennedy, sister of President John F. Kennedy, who lived at St. Coletta in Jefferson from 1949 following a failed lobotomy until her death in 2005.

Alden Sanborn, rower who won a gold medal in the men’s eight in the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium.
