Temperature Settings for the Best Energy Savings

Put your thermostat to work to save money!

best home temp wisconsinIf you’re still using an old manual thermostat in your Southeastern Wisconsin home, you could be needlessly adding to your energy and propane costs!

Today’s programmable and smart thermostats are reasonably priced and can be found easily in home improvement stores and online. And they offer some distinct advantages over manual thermostats.

You can leave behind worrying over whether or not you adjusted the thermostat before you left home for the day, as well as getting stuck with the extra heating and cooling costs because you forgot. Coming home to a chilly or uncomfortably warm home is a thing of the past.

Smart and programmable thermostats offer multiple settings so you can have one for weekdays, one for weekends, and one for vacations. Just set it and forget it!

Today’s smart thermostats also let you monitor your home’s heating and cooling system from your smartphone anywhere you get a signal. Some even let you know if your heating or cooling system needs service.

Manual thermostats can have a variance in temperature between the setting and actual temperature. That variance can be as much as 5°! The thermostat is set precisely to the desired temperature by smart and programmable thermostats. You’ll be able to save both energy and money by not having to fiddle with the thermostat all of the time in order to achieve the proper temperature.

Investing in a programmable or smart thermostat pays off from the moment it’s installed. You can save up to 10% on your heating and cooling costs!

How should I set my thermostat?

These guidelines come from the U.S. Department of Energy and are designed for an optimum balance of comfort and savings.

Winter months:

  • When you’re at home and awake, set the thermostat for 68°F.
  • Lower temperatures by 10° for the hours you’re asleep or out of the house.

Summer months:

  • When you’re home and awake, program air conditioning to 78°F.
  • Turn your air conditioning setting 7 to 10° higher for when you’re asleep or away from home.

In general:

  • Set the temperature to drop or rise 30 minutes before leaving home every day. Set the thermostat to return to normal comfort levels 20-30 minutes before you arrive home.
  • Set your thermostat to the desired temperature 60 minutes before going to bed and return it to normal comfort levels 30 minutes before waking up.
