Propane tank sizes to fit your needs

We’ve put together a list of common propane tank sizes and their uses so you have a good idea of what size tank may work best for you.

120-gallon tanks are the perfect size for operating one or two propane appliances, like a water heater.

250-gallon tanks can supply two or three appliances, such as a range, space heater, or pool heater.

320-gallon tanks are recommended for homes with three or more propane appliances. They are not large enough for whole-house heating

500-gallon tanks are necessary for a whole-house heating system.

1,000-gallon tanks are most commonly used in commercial or industrial applications. Large propane tanks like this are often used in residences that rely on propane for home heating and other appliances, like water heaters, fireplaces, pools, and spas.

How much propane do you need?

There are multiple elements that affect your propane usage. For example, if you use propane to heat your home, then the size of your house and how well it is insulated will play a big role. Additionally, the efficiency of your propane heating system will also have an impact.

To ensure you have the right size tank for your needs, we’ll need to talk to you about all of the propane appliances in your home. This includes anything from a water heater or range, to a fireplace or clothes dryer. If you also use propane to heat your home, this will increase the amount of gas you need and, therefore, alter the size tank we recommend.

We also talk about your future plans. If you are going to have more kids, have elderly parents move in, or if your adult children move back home, you’ll probably be using more propane for heating and water heating. Other things that could affect how much propane you use in the future include building an addition to your house or making a sunporch into a finished space.
